Cookies and Browser Storage

Our Cookies

We make every effort to avoid storing cookies into your web browser. The vast majority of the pages on this website will never require a cookie, and will never store one. This is also why we do not show a cookie acceptance prompt, as doing so would require setting unnecessary cookies as to not be annoying. However, there will be exceptions from time to time in order for the site to function.

If you leave a comment on our site, where comments are available, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and other information in cookies by selecting a “Remember Me” checkbox. These cookies are for your convenience when making future comments, and will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie does not contain personal data, and immediately expires.

When you log in, we will also create up to several cookies in order to save your login information and your screen display choices, such as theme or accessibility choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for one year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. Logging out of your account will remove this cookie.

Cookies from Third Parties

The Cookie and Privacy Policy for each of the third party providers used on this website can be found at the bottom of this page.

When visiting our “Contact Us” page, we utilize a privacy-focused third party service, Cloudflare, to provide security to our contact form. This third party will save a cookie to your browser as part of an automated verification process to ensure you are a human visitor, and not a robot or script shamefully looking to generate spam and waste resources. This cookie is temporary, and will expire in <1 day. Visiting our “Contact Us” page again following the expiration of this cookie, will create a new temporary cookie.

Cloudflare may also save security cookies prior to your visit to our website. Security cookies generate when accessing our website from a location, IP address, or device deemed “suspicious.” This can happen when utilizing anonymous proxy services such as Apple’s iCloud Private Relay, a commercial or public VPN (generally excluding Corporate VPNs), or when accessing the website from high traffic networks (such as via cellular, satellite or public Wi-Fi connections). This can also happen with highly unusual browser configurations. A security challenge cookie helps to prove you are a human visitor, and not a robot or script attempting to damage or bring offline this website. This cookie is only provided to Cloudflare for site security purposes and to maintain your access to this site.

Our website may also place multiple cookies in your browser when visiting our “Donate” page, which are set by the service provider, Zeffy. Zeffy may utilize third party vendors, such as hCAPTCHA, Google, and Stripe, who may also place cookies. These cookies are set in order to process your donation, and to ensure the security of your transaction and any other transaction you may perform with the service.

When a cookie expires, your browser will automatically remove them. You may block third party cookies (cookies not from this website) by adjusting your browser privacy settings. Note that by doing so, some functionality of this, and other websites may not work.

Storage Policy

This website makes use of your Browser’s cache system in order to improve your browsing experience. The browser cache allows your browser to remember what content you have accessed, and allows for the content to display quicker the next time you access it. Site assets such as images, page styles, articles, and scripts are examples of content your browser will cache. Caching helps to save on expensive hosting costs, and helps to save you money by saving bandwidth and time (important on per-megabyte/gigabyte data plans or time-metered Internet access). Website caches may last minutes, to several days, depending on your web browser. After a cache expires, your web browser will delete the cached data.

This site may present files, such as images, videos, and documents, to download. If you choose to save content from this website, this information will save in the location you choose on your device. It is up to you to manage this information using your device’s file manager.

With the exception of file downloads, you may clear any cookies and data saved by this website or a third party at any time with some simple steps, followed by a restart of your web browser. Instructions for each of the major browsers (as of the writing of this document) are provided below for your convenience. Note that we cannot provide technical support to you.

Embedded content from other websites

Pages on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.) from third parties. Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if you are visiting that website, with some exceptions, depending on how the owner of that website has configured their services.

Third party websites may collect data about you, your use of their services, use cookies, and embed additional third-party tracking. Third parties may also associate you with an existing account, if logged into their service.

Please review the Privacy Policy for each associated website, which you can typically locate at the bottom of their website, or in the navigation bar, for more information on how they collect and use information.

For user profile photos found within comments on this site, content may be provided from Gravatar.

Who we share your data with

Information is not shared about you or your website usage, with some limited exceptions. For example, we may need to use an e-mail address you supply when you contact us, in order to reply back. We may use your website usage information to improve or debug this website. We may need to share information when complying with New York and/or United States law enforcement.

When submitting comments into posts on this website, we may share the contents of your post with Akismet in order to validate the contents are free from spam. Sharing occurs at the time of pressing “Submit.” If you link to our website and “ping” our site from a compatible service, we may also share the contents of your ping to Akismet as part of moderating low quality and spam content.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it for Globally Recognizable Avatar enabled websites. Upon approval and display of your comments, your profile picture (Gravatar) is visible to the public alongside your comment. You may customize your Gravatar by signing into, or creating an account with Gravatar, and associating your e-mail address with a Gravatar profile picture.

Some information, which is outlined in the “Data we collect” section, is shared with Cloudflare in order to provide this website to you.

The privacy policy for each third party service we use on this website is linked at the bottom of our privacy policy.

Data we collect

As a part of any website on the Internet, we collect basic information in order to provide this website to your viewership. Information collected includes:

  • Your device’s Public IP Address (IPv4 and/or IPv6). This information is essential to communicating on the Internet, like a phone number, and without it, nothing would work. IP addresses can be used to identify spam and other unwanted traffic. If you are curious about the information an IP address can provide about you in your circumstance, visit IP2Location’s Demo page.
  • Basic information about your Operating System, Web Browser, and other identifiers you have elected to provide via the browser (such as the ‘Do Not Track’ flag). This information is used to tailor the website to you in a usable manner, and for security measures to function.
  • The website resources you visit, for example, the homepage or this Privacy Policy. This information is essential to communicating on the Internet, and without it, we wouldn’t know what you want to see.
  • Data you provide to us, for example via our “Contact Page” or via account registration such as e-mail addresses and passwords. This information is only provided to us on a voluntary basis. For sensitive information such as passwords, we strongly recommend generating a unique password for this website using a Password Manager or Suggested Password in order to keep your information safe, as no security measure is impenetrable.

How long we retain your data

When you leave a comment on this website, the comment and any metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website, we also store any personal information provided into a user profile, such as Usernames, E-mail Addresses, Passwords (in Encrypted format – we cannot see, and do not know what your password is), and Display Names. All registered users can see, edit, and delete their personal information at any time (with the exception of usernames). Website administrators can also see and edit this information.

Information such as your IP Address, Browser Information, and resources accessed, are retained only for as long as necessary. This is to adhere to regulations within the United States, and to audit website usage. Embedded third party content is subject to the third party’s privacy policy.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have created any comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us.

You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obligated to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

If you need to request an export of your data or a deletion of your data, please reach out to us via our “Contact Us” page.
